Thanks to miraDry’s fast acting and permanent results, you can look forward to a wardrobe for full of favorites that will last a long time.

  • No more deodorant stains

Speaking of wet marks, you’ll no longer have to worry about your favorite t-shirt or black dress sporting chalky white marks as you’ll no longer need to layer on the deodorant.

  • Don’t sweat the small stuff

Whether it’s a first date or a big presentation, with no sweat stains, it won’t be as obvious that you’re uncomfortable, nervous or anxious.

  • Clean and fresh all day long

Being sweaty at work all day is uncomfortable and embarrassing. It feels like you’re constantly adjusting to get comfortable. Continuous sweat is also unhealthy and can result in itchy rashes. With miraDry, your underarms will stay clean and fresh.

What you need to know about miraDry

A miraDry procedure can take between 1 and 2 hours. While you’ll enjoy results from your very first session, you may need two treatments spread-out about 3 or 4 months apart for optimal success. But after that, the results are permanent, and you won’t need any touch-up sessions in the future.

miraDry is a fairly painless procedure, too. Some patients do report mild discomfort, but this is alleviated with a local anesthesia in your underarm area.

Immediately after your procedure, you may need ice and over-the-counter pain relievers. You can expect a small amount of localized swelling and pain, but it will subside within a couple of weeks. The good news is that you can return to your exercise routine within just a few short days.

A safe and fast procedure

You should notice a reduction in underarm sweat immediately after your first treatment session. Studies show that sweat is reduced by over 80%. Most patients enjoy permanent results after just 2 sessions, but it can vary depending on the severity of your hyperhidrosis.

miraDry is a safe and non-invasive procedure. While it eliminates your underarm sweat glands, your body is still able to regulate its temperature. After all, you have over four million sweat glands and only 2 percent of those are found under the arms.

Is miraDry the procedure for you?

miraDry is ideal for people who suffer from excessive underarm sweating that causes embarrassing stains. If this sounds like you, it’s time to book your miraDry session!

We all try our best to strike a balance as we age. But with age, the skin becomes thinner and less elastic. Skin tags, age spots, and wrinkles become more noticeable.

Even if you do everything right, your hands can give away your age.

It’s your hands that do the talking when it comes to giving away your real age. The hands take use and abuse compared to your face. From dryness to discoloration, your hands tell a vivid story.

Here’s what your hands might just be telling other people and what you can do about it.

Too much time in the sun

Sun exposure plays a big role in the aging process. Cumulative exposure over the years can result in thinner skin, wrinkles, irregular pigmentation, and brown spots.

Regular sunscreen can protect your hands from sunburn and skin cancer; It helps in protecting your hands from the harsh aging effects of the sun.

It’s easy to forget about the hands when you’re protecting other parts of your body, which leaves them exposed daily to the sun. UV radiation results in a lot of skin changes associated with aging. The key is to not forget about your hands when you’re applying sunscreen. Don’t forget to reply when you wash your hands.

Hands-on hobbies

If you’re a big fan of hobbies that cause calluses, we have solutions for you.

Calluses are hardened bits of skin that appear from repeated friction and pressure. While they’re not usually sore, calluses can be a sign that you’re putting too much pressure on your bare hands and you need to protect your skin better.

While calluses aren’t really a cause for concern, you should treat them as soon as they pop up, or rather work to prevent them completely. The easiest way to do this is to wear gloves and the right protective padding when using anything that necessitates a forceful grip.

If you already have calluses, the best way to treat them is to soak your hands in warm water. Then, use a pumice stone to gently rub away the dead skin.

If you leave calluses to grow, there’s a chance your skin will become so dry and thick that it will tear. Split calluses are extremely painful.

Instead, seek regular beauty treatments so that your hands tell the world you’re young and fresh instead of a hardcore hobbyist!

Your hands can tell the world volumes. With regular care, you can make sure they tell everyone you’re younger than you are!

Keep your hands rejuvenated with treatments at ENVY Skin Clinic.

3 Myths About Hair Removal

January 26, 2019

myths

Many want to be rid of excess hair. There are all those crazy things you hear that put you off proper hair removal techniques. So, we thought we’d take a look at some of the mad myths and debunk them for you while we’re at it.

  1. Your hair grows back thicker when you shave

Consider this. Untouched body hair lies flat, so it feels thin and soft. When you shave, it blunts the ends of the hair which makes it stand up. This is what makes the hair feel thicker, but the actual hair doesn’t change at all.

Hard to imagine? Think about using scissors to cut a plastic straw on a diagonal rather than straight. The straw will look thicker, but it hasn’t changed at all.

  1. Laser treatment is for everyone and will last a lifetime

Laser Hair Removal treatments take 6+ sessions for desired results and can be slightly uncomfortable.  It aims at contrast in pigment and hair color.  As such, hair that has no color at all cannot be treated, such as vellus hair (peach fuzz).

Laser hair removal involves using heat to destroy the hair follicle.  This is to inhibit the growth of hair.  It is important that Laser Hair Removal be performed at a professional skin clinic.

It is worth noting that not every hair that is targeted will disappear.  It depends on your unique hair growth cycle.  This is why the treatments are done on a targeted schedule based on your cycle.

Some people say that the heat from the treatment results in break outs on the skin.  This actually is more commonly caused by dry shaving. It is very unlikely to have break outs following Laser Hair Removal.

  1. Sensitive skin is just fine with hair removal creams

Hair removal creams contain chemicals that dissolve the surface hairs on your skin. Those chemicals are powerful enough to dissolve hair which means they can harm sensitive skins.

In line with this mad myth, never leave hair removal cream on for longer than what the instructions recommend. Even if you have very coarse hair, don’t go over the maximum recommended time or you might just be left with irritated and even burnt skin.

While these myths are certainly crazy, you just can’t beat the effects and professionalism of med-spa hair removal techniques.

If you’re looking for ways to get rid of the excess hair, it’s time to book an appointment at ENVY Skin Clinic to discuss to best hair removal option for your skin and hair.

Do you invest a fair amount of time taking care of your skin? It should be one of your best assets. If not, it’s time to up the ante and get your skin feeling softer, more supple, and superb – just like a baby’s.

Here are our 8 top tips to get your skin as soft as silk.

  1. Hop on the dry-brushing bandwagon

Dry brushing makes skin ultra-silky, but the perks don’t stop there. Dry brushing also increases circulation, leaving you feeling invigorated.

Best of all, it’s really easy to do. Ideally, you should dry brush on dry skin with a natural bristle brush, large head, and long handle. Before you take a shower, start brushing at your feet. Gently whisk your brush up your body in long movements. Use light pressure and you only need to do a couple of strokes per area. Then shower like you normally would.

Most dry brushing fans advocate brushing in the morning for a refreshing boost. Dry brush for around two minutes a day and within just a week you’re sure to notice softer and smoother skin.

  1. Steam your face

A regular trip for facials or microdermabrasion can help encourage circulation and plump up the fat cells. But sometimes we just don’t have the time to get to the salon.

You can create your own steam facial bath at home by adding a couple drops of essential oils like orange, lavender, eucalyptus or clove in a glass bowl. Then pour hot water into the bowl and lean over, using a towel to cover your head.

Take slow, rhythmical breaths and enjoy the sensation of the warm water and oils opening up your pores. Follow your steam with an ultra-hydrating moisturizer like Obagi’s facial moisturizer to lock in hydration and keep skin glowing and smooth.

Make facial steams part of your weekly skin care routine for super-soft skin.

  1. Don’t forget your lips

When our lips are dry or chapped, we tend to lick them, and this only leads to more dryness. Keep your lips constantly coated with a moisturizing lip balm, preferably one with SPF of at least 30 that act as barriers against the elements.  Try EltaMD’s UV Lip balm Broad-Spectrum SPF 31

If your lips are chapped, layer a moisturizer underneath your lip balm for ultimate hydration and soft lips.

  1. Always prep before shaving

Using a shaving cream isn’t something many of us do if we’re in a rush. But skipping it can lead to bumpy, red, and irritated skin. Today’s shaving gels are very effective and they help the razor glide smoothly over your skin, keeping it as smooth as a baby’s!

  1. Hydrate

Aim to keep your skin hydrated from within by drinking at least 8 glasses of water a day. While it may sound simple enough, things like caffeine and air conditioning dehydrate us, leaving the skin looking and feeling thirsty. As a result, your skin looks dry, flaky, and even can become prone to acne.

  1. For soft feet

The thick skin on the soles of your feet is the driest part of your body, and the pressure from walking and standing all day means it’s prone to cracking.

To keep your feet as soft as a baby’s, soak them in warm water for a few minutes and then treat them to a moisturizing foot cream that contains urea.

  1. Protect your skin from the elements

The skin is like a magnet. It absorbs everything. When you head outdoors, pollution, dirt, and grime clog your pores. So, keep your body protected by wearing a good quality sunscreen, like EltaMD UV Elements Broad-Spectrum SPF 44.  Also, try to keep your skin covered as much as you can. Little tips like these help delay the onset of aging, wrinkles, and dark spots, and help to keep your skin soft and supple.

  1. De-stress whenever you can

Try as we might to avoid them, unhealthy habits and stress have a big effect on your skin. If you’re not getting enough sleep or you’re crash dieting, for instance, you get a surge of hormones or cortisol. This leads to inflammation and can worsen skin conditions.

If you need to unwind, try meditation, remember to take short and regular breaks during the workday, and learn how to just breathe when you’re feeling the pressure.

Start using these 8 tips today and you’ll achieve baby soft skin once more!

If you’ve been noticing dimpling on your behind, you’re not alone. Up to 90 percent of women experience cellulite at some point in their lives.

What is it, really? Cellulite is the fat cells we find just under the top layer of skin. These fat cells squeeze between bands of collagen, attaching muscles to the skin.

Dermatologists suggest that poor circulation – which is mostly genetic – can make those lumps and bumps look worse. That’s because when your blood flow slows down, the collagen separates, and that means the fat comes up to the surface of the skin. That’s when you get the orange-peel effect.

It’s certainly a confidence bummer.

The good news is that there are several specific exercises that target those lumps. So, if you’re ready to kick cellulite to the curb, here are the moves you need to start doing today.

The high back kick

If you’re tired of covering up your thighs and buttocks with baggy trousers just to try and hide the appearance of cellulite, this is the strength and toning exercise for you. It’s really good for boosting circulation to the lower part of the body, and it’s great for relaxing your lower back.

Here’s what to do:

  • Position yourself all fours, supporting yourself with your knees and forearms
  • Keep your elbows right below your shoulders and your back straight
  • Lift one leg towards the ceiling, slightly bending the knee
  • Lower the leg and repeat 15 times with each leg

High knees

This is another great move for improving blood flow, and it’s low-impact, too.

Stand with your chest tall and feet slightly apart. Alternating legs, bring your knees up to chest height, flexing the working glute at the top of this movement. Try to bring your leg up as high as you can and hold for a second before alternating legs.

Aim to do 3 sets for a total of 2 minutes each.

Lateral goblet lunge

Stand tall with your feet together, pointing forward, and grip a dumbbell by one end, vertically. Keep your hands at chest height with your elbows bent by your sides.

Keep your left leg straight and step the right leg as far to the right as possible, bending the knee and lowering your hips as deeply as you safely can. Push off your right foot to return to the starting position. Do 20 on the right leg and then 20 on the left to tone your glutes and thighs and bust that cellulite. Aim to do 2 sets on each side.

Classic lunges

Start by standing tall with your feet hip-distance apart. Take a big step forward or backward, lowering your body, bending both knees as you do. Aim to keep the knees at 90 degrees when bent and your front knee aligned over your front ankle.

Step your feet back together and repeat. You can do all the sets of one leg and then the other, or alternate legs for a walking lunge. Aim for 3 sets of 15 on each side with these classic lunges.

The bridge

This is an effective exercise for your glutes and abductors. It works well to firm up the muscles and reduce cellulite in your thighs and buttocks.

Do this:

  • Lie on your back with your feet flat on the floor, a little less than hip-distance apart, and knees bent. Keep your hands flat next to you.
  • Tighten your buttocks as much as you can, keep your abs engaged and tight, and lift your pelvis upwards.
  • Hold the position for around 3 or 4 seconds and lower back to the floor.
  • Aim for 3 sets of 15 with the bridge.

Goblet plie squat

Stand with your feet wider than hip-distance apart and your toes turned out, like a sumo wrestler. Hold a heavy dumbbell vertically by one end using both hands. Keep your hands at chest height with your elbows bent by your sides.

Squat down, pushing your knees out to the sides and then return to the starting position. Aim for 2 sets of 20 to really target the thighs and buttocks and tighten up those muscles.

Get softer, smoother skin in no time at all with Microdermabrasion

Are you longing to take the next step in skin treatment, but a little concerned about recovery?

Microdermabrasion is the solution. This procedure is excellent for exfoliating skin if you want the benefits of cosmetic treatment without much downtime. It’s the perfect solution for today’s busy people.

What Is Microdermabrasion?

There are several different types of Microdermabrasion.

Traditionally, the crystal system is made up of a pump, connecting tube, a vacuum, and a handpiece. The pump works to create a high-pressure stream on crystals, like aluminum oxide, magnesium oxide, sodium bicarbonate, and also sodium chloride, which work to exfoliate your skin’s surface. The vacuum then works to remove both those tiny crystals and your dead skin cells.

Another type of Microdermabrasion system consists of a roughened surface, better known as diamond Microdermabrasion. The diamond Microdermabrasion machine does not produce particles. Rather, it’s considered safer for use on areas like the lips and around your eyes. The handpiece creates slower movements around the skin and can be passed over the surface of your skin more times for a deeper treatment.

What to expect after your very first Microdermabrasion treatment?

After your first treatment, your skin will have a red or pink glow, which fades after about a day. The redness may last a little longer after a more aggressive treatment.

What’s more, your skin might feel as though you spent the day in the sun or even some extreme wind. But it’s a sensation that fades fairly quickly.

During your microdermabrasion recovery time, you will notice immediate improvements. However, optimal results are only visible once you have completed the recommended number of treatments.

How often should you get Microdermabrasion?

Overall, your microdermabrasion results will vary depending on your goals and your skin type. We can offer a professional opinion on how many treatments you’ll need for optimal results.

You should leave enough time for your skin to recover in between Microdermabrasion treatments, too, so that your skin can heal effectively. Overtreating the skin with Microdermabrasion treatments by not leaving sufficient time between treatments can do more harm than good, leaving your skin feeling more sensitive than usual.

Typically, we recommend spacing your treatments at least two weeks apart.

Once you have completed the recommended number of sessions for your skin type, you can choose to have touch up sessions once every 1 to 3 months to maintain the full effects of treatment.

How to look after your skin after Microdermabrasion treatments

Of course, you’ll want to maximize your Microdermabrasion results and recovery. That’s why it’s important to carefully follow the post-procedure instructions, such as keeping your new skin properly clean and sufficiently moisturized.

It’s also important to avoid exposing your skin to the sun and wearing any makeup right after your treatment. You need to allow the skin time to heal. If you absolutely cannot avoid exposure to the sun, make sure you don’t step outdoors without an SPF 30 or higher sunscreen.

What to expect – The results

One of the biggest benefits of Microdermabrasion is that the results tend to be immediate and totally noticeable. Clogged or enlarged pores, fine lines, complexion issues, and a whole lot of other skin issues can be treated with Microdermabrasion.

What’s more, many patients experience a huge improvement in the tone, texture, and color of the treated areas.

So many amazing Microdermabrasion benefits

According to studies on the benefits of Microdermabrasion, regular treatments don’t just help improve skin irregularities, but also encourage radiant, smoother skin.

With Microdermabrasion treatments, you can look forward to these benefits:

  • Softer fine lines and wrinkles
  • Smoother skin surface
  • Less noticeable acne scars
  • Less skin discoloration
  • Reduces the appearance of pores

Book your Microdermabrasion treatment today

Microdermabrasion offers big results with little downtime. Provided you follow the post-treatment care instructions and give your skin enough time to heal between treatments, you can look forward to looking refreshed, smoother, and brighter!

Cellulite beyond exercise

December 9, 2018

Leg

If exercise isn’t enough, try other cellulite-busting solutions

The skin is made up of multi-layered tissue with connective cords that act similar to a net to keep your muscles, fat, and skin tethered together. When that fat pushes against the connective tissue, you get cellulite.

Cellulite is very common, most often found on the arms, lower stomach, breasts, and thighs. While many people associate cellulite with being overweight, even thin people and those who work out all the time can suffer from dimpling due to cellulite.

Is Exercise Really a Cure for Cellulite?

Believe it or not, not all types of exercise can help with cellulite. In fact, if you work out and still have cellulite, you may need to look at the types of exercises you are doing.

The American Council on Exercise says that people with cellulite ought to perform cardio activities most days of the week coupled with two to three days of resistance-training workouts. So, if you currently only do cardio, you might want to add strength training to your cellulite-busting regime.

The muscles lie underneath the skin. When you replace fat with muscle, you help your body to look more toned and reduce cellulite. Squats, lunges, bicep curls, and abdominal crunches are the types of spot-reduction exercises you can try.

But what if exercise isn’t working for you in your effort to deal with cellulite?

There are other options.

Smoothing the Bumps

Fortunately, there are ways to deal with those the unwanted appearance of dimpling skin, both naturally and with medical treatments.

There are a number of actions you can start doing right now to minimize or eliminate cellulite, such as:

  • Warm water and lemon – drink a glass of warm water with lemon as soon as you wake up to balance your body’s pH, hydrate the lymphatic system, and detoxify. On that note, proper hydration is important to keeping tissues and the lymphatic system clean, so make sure you’re drinking enough water throughout the day.
  • Quit smoking – every puff you take affects the blood supply to the skin, making it thinner and more likely to sag. This makes cellulite more visible, especially in the arms, buttocks, and thighs.
  • Dry brush – dry body brushing improves circulation and lymphatic drainage, reducing cellulite.
  • Get a massage – treat yourself to a vacuum cup and give yourself a massage. This method can be a little sore at first, but it can help to reduce cellulite.
  • Cut the salt – sodium leads to you retaining excess water and making your skin look even more dimply and lumpy.

With the right diet and products, you can fight free radicals to keep your skin young and firm

You might not be able to see it, but your skin is under constant attack by free radicals.

Left alone, those free radicals bounce around, causing damage to collagen and encouraging hyperpigmentation. Stop them, though, and you can help your skin stay smooth and even.

What exactly are free radicals?

Free radicals are minute reactive oxygen molecules that cause damage to the skin. In fact, they damage your skin cells, collagen production, and even your DNA.

We produce some free radicals internally as cells turnover, but the rest comes from external influences like pollution and UV rays.

Over time, the effects of free radicals show up in your skin as sagging, roughness, and wrinkles.

Can you fight free radicals?

The good news is that you can fight back against free radicals.

Antioxidants, especially, are vital in your fight against surface skin damage. Antioxidants help neutralize the molecules and in turn prevent them from causing signs of aging.

Your body produces a small number of antioxidants, but you need to try and consume or apply more on a regular basis.

Here are our top tips for fighting back.

  1. Eat an antioxidant rich diet

Antioxidants work to clean up free radicals naturally. You can include antioxidant-rich foods in your diet every day, including:

  • Green tea
  • Grapes and berries
  • Fruits and vegetables that are rich in carotenoids like carrots and squash
  • Dark, leafy green vegetables
  • Cruciferous vegetables such as brussels sprouts and broccoli
  • Fermented foods like kombucha and miso

  1. Apply your antioxidants

Many skin care products now contain a healthy dose of antioxidants such as vitamins A, C, and E. Using these products daily can help your skin fight back against free radicals.

Neocutis’ Oxidative Stress is an antioxidant-rich serum, packed with vitamin C to promote regeneration of antioxidants while helping to neutralize free radicals.

  1. Start and end each day with antioxidants

Dermatologists used to recommend only using antioxidants in the morning since you don’t expose your skin as much at night. However, research shows that inflammation from daytime UV damage can continue up to several hours after exposure, which means you need antioxidants in the evening, too.

At night, make use of products that contain coenzyme Q10 and resveratrol. Resveratrol switches on the mechanism your body uses to produce its own antioxidants, preparing your skin for the next day’s fight.

  1. Vitamin C is your friend

Vitamin C is well-known for immunity boosting benefits, but it can also protect your skin from free radicals and UV rays. You’ll easily get your vitamin C boost from a number of foods, but a number of studies show minimal impact to your skin from consuming more vitamin C. So, the best way to protect your skin is through vitamin C-enriched lotions and creams.

The Obagi-C Rx System contains key ingredients like vitamin C and hydroquinone to help reduce hyperpigmentation and keep your skin looking young, smooth and firm.

  1. Avoid toxins and pollutants

Besides improving your diet and skincare regime, you can also reduce free radical damage by avoiding environmental pollutants in water and reducing chemical exposure in both cosmetic and household products.

You can also:

  • Take steps to reduce stress
  • Avoid overusing antibiotics and medications
  • Get regular exercise
  • Try to normalize your cholesterols and blood sugar levels to prevent blood pressure changes, heart problems, and diabetes.

You can fight back

Your body produces free radicals as byproducts of everyday cellular reactions, like breathing, as well as exposure to pollutants, radiation, stress, a poor diet, and other toxins.

Luckily, antioxidants can help slow down the adverse effects of free radicals and protect you from disease and signs of early aging. Antioxidant sources like leafy greens and vitamin-enriched skincare products are the way to go.

Make sure you’re getting the right antioxidants in the right form to successfully fight free radical damage!

Ignore the myths and take good care of your skin

Thanks to the combination of old wives’ tales and the online world of self-diagnoses, there is an abundance of conflicting skin care advice.

Often, it’s not at all accurate.

In fact, some of the so-called advice could be doing your skin more harm than anything.

Below, we debunk 7 of the most common skin myths we regularly come across and offer helpful tips on what to do instead to keep your skin smooth, glowing, and gorgeous.

Myth 1: You should exfoliate your skin at least 2 – 3 times a week

It’s never a good idea to over-exfoliate your skin. The small granules in scrubs are too large to penetrate into your pores. So, they scratch the surface, literally. That makes for thinner skin over time.

Instead, opt for a diligent cleansing routine to remove dead skin cells, surface debris, and makeup for younger, glowing skin.

Lather your cleanser onto a natural sea sponge and massage onto damp skin using circular motions. Remember to rinse well and pat your face dry.

Neocutis stocks a delightfully nourishing and gentle exfoliating range of cleansers.

Myth 2: You don’t need sunscreen when it’s cloudy, rainy or winter

Even if plummeting temperatures keep you wrapped up and indoors, you still need to protect your skin. When it comes to UVB and UVA, there’s no place to hide and no amount of rain, clouds or cold temperatures will protect you. Even sitting indoors by an open window or under fluorescent lighting is enough to do damage to your skin.

Apply a broad-spectrum SPF, like the excellent range from EltaMD, each and every day, regardless of your layers or indoor preferences.

Myth 3: Acne is always caused by not washing your face

This is one of the most popular myths we come across. Here are the facts: for acne to develop, you need a combination of sebum, bacteria, clogged pores, and inflammation.

Sure, not helping your face will make things worse, but it’s not the sole cause of acne.

To prevent acne, follow a regular regime of moisturizing, limiting sun exposure, and wearing too much pore-clogging makeup without thoroughly cleaning it off every day.

Myth 4: You should always use antibacterial soap to keep your skin clean

It’s normal for your skin to have bacteria on it. In fact, it’s close to impossible to keep skin totally free of bacteria for an amount of time. What’s more, experts suggest that using antibacterial soap could result in even more bacteria.

You don’t need to use an antibacterial soap every day. Thorough and consistent washing with regular soap can help prevent the spread of germs and infections.

Myth 5: Your skin type will never change

Your skin actually changes throughout your lifetime. That’s because it’s prone to a host of hormonal, environmental and seasonal changes.

It’s common for women to have a combination skin, such as dry and oily, and adult acne is often a common occurrence.

Keep your skin nourished with the right moisturizer and serum for your skin type. Seek professional advice as your skin changes to ensure you are using the right products at the right time in your life.

Myth 6: You should always use all your products from just one brand

This isn’t exactly a black and white area. If you want to buy your entire skincare routine from one brand, then yes, it’s easy enough to do and the products are usually designed to work together.

When you use one range, you know that you’re going to get just the right amount of SPF, anti-aging, and exfoliation benefits.

But what if your skin is going through a change? What if you buy an entire range only to find it doesn’t suit your skin?

It’s all about finding what works specifically for your skin. So, if you discover the perfect night cream from one brand and a soothing eye cream from another, it’s okay to cherry pick your selection.

Myth 7: Your skin is dry because you’re not drinking enough water

Dry skin is really a manifestation of inflammation that’s not visible to the naked eye.

One of the best ways to counter the causes of dry and flaky skin is internally with a healthy diet and antioxidant-rich supplements. Also, aim to keep baths and showers short and avoid hot water that dries out your skin. Again, avoid over-exfoliating and use gentle cleansers applied to a sea sponge to gently clean your skin.

As you can tell, the common thread is to keep skin protected from the sun and nourished with the right products for your particular skin type.

Ditch the myths and book a consultation at ENVY Skin Clinic to find the perfect regime for your skin.

Prep Skin

Summer’s behind us now, but is your skin ready for the dramatic transition into fall?

Your skin is accustomed to the sunny, warm weather of summer, and now it must adapt to cooler, drier air. Fortunately, you can start prepping now to lay the foundation for a seamless transition for glowing, beautiful skin.

10 Ways to Get Your Skin Ready for Fall

  1. Add a serum to your routine

In the summer, a lightweight moisturizer was just fine to stop your skin from drying out. With cooler weather comes drier air. It may be a little too soon to switch to a heavier moisturizer but you can start using a serum like Neocutis’ Hyalis beneath your current moisturizer. This will help shield your skin from pore-clogging creams and creates a moisture-rich barrier to protect you from the change in weather.

  1. Thicken up that moisturizer

As fall starts to close in, ditch the lighter oil-free moisturizer you’ve been using in place for a heavier moisturizer to keep your skin healthy. Consider a cream with ceramides which act like fatty acids that your skin craves more of during colder months.

  1. Protect the thin skin under your eyes

The skin around the eyes is particularly fragile, which means it doesn’t cope well with exposure to cool, dry air. The good news is you can use a moisturizing eye cream like the range of eye products from ELASTIderm to ward off wrinkles and fine lines.

Eye creams have special formulas for exceptional moisture, perfect for protecting your skin this fall.

  1. Start exfoliating now

Have you noticed your skin getting dull and rough during the colder months? This a sign that you need to exfoliate, and you can start right now.

Exfoliation removes dead skin cells from the surface of your skin. Those dead skin cells don’t just produce a rough complexion, they also prevent your skin care products from properly penetrating into the deeper layers of your skin.

Aim to exfoliate once or twice a week as we go into the cooler months, but no more, as you don’t want to strip your skin of the moisture it richly needs right now.

  1. Lather up the lotion

Once summer’s humidity starts to disappear, your skin may be left feeling itchy and drier. That’s because there’s less moisture in the air to keep you hydrated.

One of the easiest ways to stop that itching is to hydrate your entire body, not just your face. Moisturizers like the EltaMD moisture-rich body cream contain enzymes that promote a skin barrier to retain moisture while nourishing your dry summer skin.

  1. Hold onto the sunscreen

Don’t throw away your summer sunscreen yet. Just because it’s getting darker and colder outside doesn’t mean your skin isn’t still bashed by damaging UV rays. You don’t need a separate sunscreen if your products already contain an SPF 30 or higher, though.

  1. Your skin is what you eat

Fall can be a busy time of year, making it all too easy to fall off the healthy wagon. Yet, healthy skin comes from within.

Stick to whole foods rich in fatty acids and antioxidants. Opt for oily fishes like salmon and antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables such as cauliflower, cucumbers, blueberries, and carrots.

  1. Don’t forget to prep your lips

Many people forget about their lips with their skincare routine, and that means dry, chapped lips come fall and winter. As with the rest of your body, you should exfoliate your lips and then nourish them with a lip balm at least twice a day to hydrate and protect them.

  1. Give your feet some TLC

Just because you’re putting the sandals away doesn’t mean you should forget about your feet until next summer. Keep your feet soft and smooth by remembering to exfoliate regularly and keeping them moisturized with a foot butter or moisture-rich cream.

  1. Invest in hand cream

Hands easily become cracked and dry during the colder months, with some people suffering itchy, dry chilblains, too. Start increasing the number of times you apply hand cream to your hands now for soft, supple digits all fall long.

After protecting your skin from the summer rays, don’t let all that hard work go to waste. With the above tips, you can effortlessly prep your skin for fall.

Some morning tips….

Yes

Eat some protein.
Trade your bagel or piece of fruit for eggs or Greek yogurt . A recent study found that eating a high-protein breakfast helped women stay fuller longer and avoid overeating later in the day.

Sunscreen!
You know you need sun protection daily (even when it’s cloudy), but do you realize that the SPF in your makeup probably isn’t cutting it?  Instead, double up on protection by using an SPF moisturizer under your foundation or powder. And don’t forget your lips, neck, backs of hands and eye area — all of those spots are exposed to aging UV rays just as much as your face.

Drink a big glass of water.
Dehydration not only causes you to feel terrible, it messes with the way your skin looks — and after a night’s rest, your body needs fluids. Whether or not, starting the day with a tall glass of water can’t hurt.

Move your body.
Studies have shown that people who exercise in the morning sleep better at night. And the beauty benefits of sleep are very real. Shift your schedule to make a morning workout easier to manage.

Mist your face.
Keep a can of mineral water mist in your fridge and give your face a cool spritz first thing. The chilly mist will help bring down morning puffiness and leave you feeling bright and awake. A cold cloth on your face is a nice alternative.

Drink green tea.
If you need an A.M. caffeine boost, green tea is the best way to get it. The drink is packed with flavonoids, a type of antioxidant, which have been shown to slow cell damage (read: aging) and are even linked to a reduced risk of certain cancers. Can’t bear to give up your coffee (us either)? No need; coffee contains antioxidants, too and has also been shown to speed up metabolism.

8 Tips To Soothe Dry Skin

November 4, 2014

Flaky, scaly, itchy — these are the classic signs of dry skin. And who wants to look like a lizard, much less touch dry skin? Slapping on lotion when dry skin gets flaky isn’t enough to kick this skin health problem — you need to take some serious steps to soothe dry skin.

9 Tips to Soothe Dry Skin

8 Dry Skin-Soothers

Try these beauty tips to add moisture and bring dry skin back to life:

  1. Cool down your showers. Very hot water will only dry your skin out more. So when you enjoy a bath or shower, keep the water lukewarm instead of hot. Same goes for when you wash your face.
  2. Moisturize, moisturize. It seems like a no-brainer — if you’ve got dry skin, you need to moisturize. But how and when you apply moisturizer makes a big difference. If you’ve got dry skin, apply a moisturizer to your face and the skin all over your body at least once a day, or twice a day for extremely dry skin. The best time to put it on is when you get out of the shower. You should always pat, not rub, your skin dry so that a little moisture is left on the skin. Apply moisturizer quickly to lock in the moisture from the shower. A soothing oil added to your bath, is also recommended.
  3. Exfoliate your skin. Avoiding exfoliation because you think it’s drying your skin? It’s not. Regular exfoliation is actually great for dry skin. That thick, callused, dead skin that’s covering healthy skin beneath is soaking up all the moisture. So slough it off with an exfoliant, then moisturize.
  4. Be gentle to your skin. If you’ve got dry skin, it’s time to skip those harsh, drying bar soaps and upgrade to something a little more soothing for your skin. Some bar soaps are now made with moisturizers, but even better, are body washes that contain a lot of moisturizers — and always look for products for sensitive skin. If you’re using an anti-aging cream to combat wrinkles, you may want to focus more on moisturizing instead. Anti-aging creams “can perpetuate the dryness,” as they often contain acids and other ingredients that can really dry out the skin. So skip anti-aging in favor of more moisturizing products.
  5. Wear sunscreen. Sunscreen will not only help protect your skin from drying burns and sun damage but also offer moisturizing qualities. Apply sunscreen every day to all areas that see the sun — face, neck, ears. You can even get a moisturizer with built-in sunscreen to get the benefits of two products in one. Just be sure that the sunscreen is rated SPF 15 or higher.
  6. Cover skin in the cold. Extreme outdoor weather can suck the moisture right out of your skin, whether it’s the bitter cold of winter or the dry heat of summer. Use physical barriers in the cold, like masks and gloves, to protect the skin from wind burn. A hot, humid climate won’t dry your skin, but dry, desert-like areas will take a toll. Keep skin well moisturized in dry, hot weather, and try to stay out of the heat whenever you can.
  7. Use a humidifier. When the climate outside is dry, you can escape inside your home, but what if the air in your home is drying, too? Use a humidifier in the room to put moisture back in the air. This is especially helpful in winter if your home has drying central heat.
  8. Cut back on bathing. One good way to preserve moisture in your skin is to cut back a bit on bathing. Don’t bathe every day if you can get away with it.  Instead use a washcloth and gentle soap to wash your face and neck, under your arms, and any other areas where skin touches skin. It’s also a good idea to limit the amount of time you spend in the shower or bath — 10 to 15 minutes max.

ProductsWe’re going to break down a list of products in order of start to finish. We do not recommend you necessarily need to use all of these products, but because everyone has different skin types and everyone uses different products, it’s a good list to find the ones you use and follow the order of start to finish.
Skin Care Routine – Start to Finish
-Cleanser: Start out with a clean slate each day.
-Toner: Used mostly from those with oily skin and should be used on freshly clean skin.
-Glycolic Acid: Once you start looking for anti-aging properties, many people toss the toner for a glycolic acid product. Face wipes make it super easy to incorporate effective exfoliation into your morning routine.
-Spot Treatment: If you’re using a spot treatment for acne, the active ingredients need to be directly on the skin’s surface for best results. Use after your toner or glycolic acid treatment.
-Serum: Serums contain highly-concentrated ingredients that penetrate the skin’s surface deeper than moisturizers. A serum should always be applied before your moisturizer.
-Moisturizer: Apply your daily moisturizer after your serum has had time to completely soak in.
-Eye Cream: Apply with your ring fingers and gently pat it into the skin around the eyes.
-Sunscreen: If your moisturizer does not have SPF protection, use a stand-alone facial sunscreen. Reapply throughout the day.
-Primer: If you use makeup and would like to use a primer, it would come after your facial skin care products. Follow with concealer and foundation.
Before bed, follow the same routine (without sunscreen, of course) but make sure you’re not overdoing some of the products that have harsh ingredients in them which could lead to dry, red or flaky skin. Make sure to follow the recommendations by the manufacturer. Some products are only needed in the morning (example: eye creams for puffy eyes) while others should be used morning and night (moisturizers).
